SCOPE OF PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

SCOPE OF PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

Physical Geography is primarily concerned with man and his environment. It has wide subject-matter and vast scope. Most of the human activities are influenced by the physical environment in which they take place. Therefore, the study of physical geography provides key to understand the different cultural patterns that have evolved ober a long period in the habitable parts of the world.

The environment of life consists of realms of matter, namely
  1. Lithosphere
  2. Atmosphere
  3. Hydrosphere
  4. Biosphere
Lithosphere is the solid earth comprising of mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, etc. It provides a stable platform for life layer and is the basic source of several nutrients elements without which existence and growth of life is not possible on earth.

Atmosphere is the gaseous envelop which surrounds the earth. It contains vital elements like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. These elements are essential to sustain life on the earth. Different parts of the earth experience variety of climatic and weather conditions due to the presence of the atmosphere.

Hydrosphere encompasses tthe global reserve of water in gaseous, liquid and solid state. Most of the earths water is saline and is confined to oceans and seas.

Biosphere is the fourth dimension of environment. It lies at the contact zone between lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. The whole life on the planet earth is confined to biosphere as a result of which this shallow layer is called life layer.
