Some facts about United Nations


  • Now, only sovereign states can become members of the U.N., but four of the original member states(Belarus, India, the Philippines, and Ukraine) were not independent at the time of their admission. Now, all member states are sovereign.
  • There is onenon-member observer state, the Holy see in Vatican City.
  • The head of the United Nations is the Secretary-General. The appointment is based on geographical rotation, but never from the permanent Security Council member states.
  • Louise Frecehtte was the first woman appointed to the post of Deputy-Secretary-General of the UN in 1999.
  • There are also 10 seats on the Security Council for two year terms. The current non-permanent members are: Azerbaijan, Colombia, Germany, Guatemala, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal, South Africa and Togo.
  • The League of the Nations is the UN's predecessor organization which failed after being created at the end of the world war I. The idea was drafted by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, but failed because it had no army to back up its stance. The League of Nations was established by the treaty of versailles in 1919.
  • Child actress Shirley Temple Black was once appointed as a U.S. representative to the United Nations in 1969.
